Top 10 Things to Consider When Choosing Childcare

Choosing childcare is an important decision. Here is my list of the top 10 things to consider when choosing a childcare center, principles I didn’t budge on when making the choice for my own family.

  1. Values That Align with Your Family
Does the center support the spiritual, moral, or cultural values important to your family? If faith is central to your home, consider a program that nurtures children through Bible stories, songs, and a Christ-centered environment – perhaps connected to a local church.
  1. Safety and Cleanliness
Your child’s health and well-being are non-negotiable. Ask about safety protocols, staff background checks, secure entry systems, and daily cleaning routines. A good center will be happy to share their procedures.
  1. Warm, Experienced Staff
The teachers and caregivers are the heart of any childcare program. Look for low turnover, proper certifications, and—just as important—a genuine love for children that shows in how they interact with each little one.
  1. A Strong, Nurturing Curriculum
Children thrive when play-based learning is paired with purposeful structure. Ask how the center supports growth in areas like language, social-emotional skills, early math, and movement—and whether they follow a recognized curriculum.
  1. Sense of Community and Friendship
A great childcare center feels like a second home. Look for opportunities for your child to build friendships, and for your family to connect with others through events, programs, or even just warm daily interactions.
  1. Location and Convenience
Whether it’s close to home, work, or school pickup routes, location matters. Make sure it fits into your daily routine without creating extra stress.
  1. Transparent Communication
How does the center keep you in the loop? Look for daily updates, open-door policies, and teachers or directors who are quick to respond to questions or concerns.
  1. Age-Appropriate Classrooms and Activities
Each age group should have developmentally appropriate toys, activities, and learning goals. From infant tummy time to preschool science experiments, the right setting helps kids thrive.
  1. Affordability and Flexibility
Look for a program that fits your budget and your schedule—whether you need full-time care, part-time hours, or something in between. Some centers offer multi-child discounts or seasonal programs like summer camps.
  1. Joyful Atmosphere
Trust your gut. When you walk through the door, does it feel warm, loving, and full of life? Happy kids, engaged teachers, and a calm but energetic environment speak volumes.
