Teacher Highlight: Ms. Ruth

Since our doors opened in 2018, Ms. Ruth has been a part of our Infant/Toddler team here at Vine & Branches Lutheran Church & Childcare in Aldie, VA. She cares for the children in our Sunday Nursery every week and will be celebrating 7 dedicated years in June. I was excited to sit down and chat with Ms. Ruth about her career in education and her time at Vine & Branches. She is a loving and inviting person who makes everyone she meets feel cared for.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, life, hobbies)

A: I have two children who are adults now, and both live in Nashville, TN. I visit them a few times a year. Penny, the family dog (Bassett Hound) is so loved and has been a part of the family for 13 years. I love to watch movies in my free time and take time to go to “Nats” games in DC when I’m able.

Q: Have you always known that you wanted to be a teacher?

A: No, life took me on this path. I started taking English classes in Mexico to open more doors of opportunity. As the oldest sibling of many kids, I always helped to take care of my younger siblings, so I think I was ready when I became a teacher.

Q: How long have you been a teacher at Vine & Branches?

A: 7 years and I still love it here!

Q: What ages have you taught, and which is your favorite?

A: I started teaching in American Elementary Schools as an Assistant Teacher and taught Kindergarten as well. I think 1st grade was one of my favorite ages to teach at the Elementary level and in Childcare, I enjoy Infants and Toddlers the most. I love teaching the little ones because I think it’s an opportunity to do it better for the kids in my care than I knew to do with my own children when they were young. It’s important to me to create a classroom where students are truly loved and cared for.

Q: What is one piece of advice that you would give PARENTS of Infants and Toddlers?

A: Follow your instinct when it comes to your child. Since children this young can’t yet verbalize what is happening in their bodies, you know what’s best for them. ALSO, take them to the doctor when they are sick. We might think it’s nothing, but it’s better for a doctor to confirm that they are okay rather than the opposite.

Q: What is something you can share about children in the Infant and Toddler stages of development that is good for parents to know?

A: If your child is well fed, rested, and clean, then you are already a great parent! Do not stress about the little things and the mistakes you might make. It’s okay for them to cry as a healthy part of their communication development. Also, give mom LOTS of rest and support to recover after birth.

Q: Why do you think parents should bring their children to Vine & Branches Lutheran Church & Childcare?

A: It is a safe place where the love that the teachers have for Jesus, shows in how they care for and love the children in their classes. The teachers go beyond academic development and truly love each child here.
